Making math fun can be super easy, with the right resources and skills!

The main issue is that math can cause real anxiety for some students. Take a look at this study (1), they took nearly 1000 students. The results were spread in thirds, students who like or love math, students who are okay and feel okay about math, and students who feel lost, afraid, hate math. Arithmophobia (fear of math) is thought to be a widespread problem in society today.

Fear of math, or people who aren’t comfortable with math skills will be our main focus for making math enjoyable. For most of our students issues with math begin in early childhood and continue throughout their educational career. Unfourtly lacking an important math foundation will keep them from developing skills needed for both their school work and also future jobs.

The way we approach teaching maths in today’s classroom is the critical difference between people learning and becoming solid in mathematics and students  being afraid of math and having an inferiority complex when working out problems.

There is no magic wand, and as a teacher you don’t have to be a genius to encourage growth in math. Students can be motivated. Let’s look at some questions and concerns that educators just like you have when teaching math:

How can we make maths interesting for primary students?

Let students play in math. There are specific math games that cover certain skills, or let them see the reason behind the math your teaching. Ask thoughtful questions as you teach life skills in math. Also take the interests of students in account when planning math activities. (3)

The highest motivator for primary students today is to make math fun. Math games provide a way to practice skills without the repetitiveness of worksheets.

Studies show that teaching students through concepts that they are familiar with is the best way to make math easier. Applying real world problems help to bring the gap between abstract thoughts or unknown rules and things that they are familiar with everyday.

When adding and subtracting use problems that they would encounter.

“Sam wants to buy two video games for $50 a piece. He has $80 dollars. Will Sam have enough money? Why or Why not?

Then go further by asking if the students could come up with ideas for Sam to make the needed amount of money to buy the games.

How do you improve student engagement in math?

Make math time fun. The best way to keep students engaged is to use varying methods and resources. Use technology, and a combination of games and direct learning. Don’t make lessons too long, keep instruction short and then use practice time as a way to instruct through games.(4)

A good math teacher understands that people learn in different ways. They strive to use different teaching methods to help as many students as possible. They plan and then have the flexibility to extend a lesson or change a lesson based on student needs. They use technology and use individual learning plans for their students.
